Hello Redhead World!
Hello everyone. I found redhead-world.net through facebook, so I decided to look into it and see what this site was all about. It seems like it'll be a fun place to hang-out online.
I guess it wouldn't be a true introduction without telling my "redhead stories."
My mother and father are both brunnette, and out of 4 children they had 3 redheads. Funny story about that...when my older sister was born my mom was so shocked by the hair color and exclaimed "where did the hair come from?!" the nurse jokingly responded, "must be from the mailman." My mother (still loopy from medicines) sobbed and sobbed to my father promising that my sister was his (there was no concern, my mother is a very faithful woman and my sister looks almost exactly like my father). My father then turned to the nurse and responded, "Our mailman has red hair."
--She promised she'd never make that joke again, lol!
I've grown up with random people reaching out to touch my hair, or play with it without asking. Sometimes in shopping lines someone will reach out just to touch it...it's really quite awkward at times, lol. When I was little I was once terrified by an elderly woman in a nursing home who couldn't speak very well. She was patting my head really hard and speaking gibberish, and just as I was on the verge of tears a nurse took her away. The nurse returned explain to me that the elderly woman's daughter was a redhead as well, and I reminded her of her.
What didn't help with the "drive-by hair pullings" was that my mother did not allow me to cut my hair growing-up, so it was extremely long...down to my hips. LOL! When my grandmother developed breast cancer and began to lose her hair was the first time I cut my own hair. She was so upset at losing her hair that I told her I'd give her mine. Thankfully she was in remission before I could even get enough hair to make a wig from.
Currently with the "making fun of gingers" craze going around, I am facing some discrimination. Most people mean it jokingly, but I then point out that if I called someone the "N-word" even in jest, that it would NOT be a laughing matter. Usually that clears the whole ordeal up. Sometimes with meanies, though, it just makes the situation worse.
All I have to say is this: Chuck Norris is a ginger!!! He'll round-house kick you if you make fun of his hair!
- Just a point about mailmen and red hair. We used to have a redhaired mailman here, I loved it when he came round to drop of f our parcels because it was so unusual to get one here with RED hair! Then he went somewhere....and we got different ones :(
- 3 out of 4 - awesome! My mom's mom has a similar story. She was a redhead and always wanted one, but had two brunettes and a blonde. Between her and my dad though, I was bound to have it.
Funny story too. :)
Yea, the touching thing is a big issue. I guess being a guy, I don't mind too much. ;) One woman at the last Celtic festival kinda asked while reaching, and her husband pointed out the double standard, if it'd been a guy touching a woman's hair it wouldn't have been ok. Might make a good forum topic. ;)
It's been said gingerism or redism is the "last acceptable form of racism." That's one of the things we redheads will have to discuss on sites like this - it's a difficult issue. I'm kind of surprised though, being in my 20's too and in the U.S., I don't get much. I always picture it more in the UK or school kids. There's a couple articles on Hug a Ginger Day and redhead festivals in the redhead news section.
Great first blog! Funny, thought-provoking and pertinent to us all. - Nobody in my family is redheaded apart from me and my brother ( I have 3 siblings) :) It's even very rare hair color in my country :) when my brother was born, my mom thought that he has red hair because of Cernobyl disaster in 1986 (please, dont tell me that you dont know what happened there, I am getting sick of explaining facts that are considered as general knowledge... ) however, when I was born 5 years later, she couldnt find any explanation for my hair color - especially when my twin sister has brown hair and looks exactly as my older sister :D obviously, we are siblings with totaly different genes :)
